Can a 31-Day Car Rental Save You Money on Washington Rental-Car Taxes?

August 26, 2026By Ben at SHYFT Rentals

If you need a car for about a month, one extra day can matter.

If you need a car for about a month, one extra day can matter.

Washington defines a “rental car” for its special rental-car tax as a passenger vehicle rented without a driver for no more than 30 consecutive days. That means a rental lasting 31 days or longer may fall outside that particular tax instead of being treated like a conventional short rental.

That does not make a long rental tax-free. Washington retail sales tax can still apply, and longer vehicle rentals may also be subject to the state’s additional motor-vehicle sales/use tax. The precise rate can depend on where the customer receives the vehicle and, for recurring payments, where it is primarily used.

The useful comparison is therefore not “tax versus no tax.” It is the tax structure for a rental of 30 days or less versus the structure for a rental longer than 30 days.

Why SHYFT focuses on monthly rentals

SHYFT is designed for people who need dependable transportation for a meaningful stretch of time: a long repair, a temporary work assignment, a move, a family visit, or time spent exploring Washington without buying another car.

Longer rentals can reduce the administrative churn of renewing a daily car, make the base rate easier to understand, and potentially avoid the special taxes attached to short rental cars. SHYFT’s advertised monthly rates are shown before applicable taxes, and the checkout total should show the taxes that apply to the specific transaction before payment.

Why SHYFT uses “31+ days” in tax discussions

SHYFT’s minimum rental period is 30 days. Washington’s special rental-car definition includes rentals lasting exactly 30 consecutive days, so the potential distinction begins only when the agreement is for more than 30 consecutive days. That still does not make the transaction tax-free.

Tax laws and local rates can change. This article is general information, not personal tax advice. Ask SHYFT for a current quote and consult a qualified Washington tax professional if tax treatment is important to your decision.
