Two Washington Road Trips That Reward Extra Time: North Cascades and the San Juans
When you have a vehicle for a month instead of a weekend, you can wait for the right weather window. Two trips that benefit from that flexibility are the North Cascades Highway and the San Juan Islands.

North Cascades Highway
State Route 20 crosses dramatic mountain country, but the high section closes seasonally and can also be affected by fire, smoke, construction, or severe weather. Check WSDOT and park alerts immediately before traveling rather than relying on an old itinerary.
When the full route is open, build in time for short stops and viewpoints instead of treating the highway as a race to the other side. If it is closed, destinations on either side may still be accessible—but never route around a closure on an unsuitable forest road.
San Juan Islands by vehicle
For Friday Harbor, Orcas, Shaw, or Lopez, vehicle reservations are available from Anacortes and are strongly recommended. A reservation saves space; it is not the ferry ticket itself. Reserve both outbound and return travel, review the current check-in window, and arrive early enough to keep the reservation.
It is also worth asking whether you need a car on the island every day. Walking on can simplify ferry logistics for some visits, while a vehicle can help when lodging, weather, luggage, or planned stops are spread out.
Keep the plan flexible
Ferry schedules, mountain access, and weather change. Confirm everything on official sites on the day of travel. If you want a few personal recommendations that are not going into a public roundup, talk to Ben. Some places are better shared thoughtfully than optimized for clicks.
